Scott Mlyn has an extensive career in photography that includes experience as a picture editor in digital, print and mobile platforms, a photographer, a book developer and author, a teacher and a director of short films.
His photographs have appeared in various electronic and print media as well as in museum exhibits including the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition “Diamonds are Forever: Artists and Writers on Baseball.” He is the author of Before the Game (1988), a book about major league baseball that showcases his photography and includes a foreword by Charles Kuralt. He also directed a film, Before the Game, which features his photography.
In connection with the publication of Before the Game, Mlyn was interviewed by Bryant Gumbel on NBC’s Today show and the book was featured in The New York Times and USA Today. Gumbel said the book “Goes to the very core of baseball.” Daniel Okrent said “Mlyn finds those baseball moments that contain essences.”
The film, Before the Game (2005), was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Mlyn lectured and introduced the film at both museums and it is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
His iPhone photography was in New York State of Mind (2012) an art exhibit at the Flinn Gallery in Greenwich, CT, and he is a principal photographer for On the High Line, a book published by Thames & Hudson in 2012.
Scott is currently a picture editor and photographer for CNBC. Previously, he was the director of photography for Sport magazine, and for many years deputy picture editor of BusinessWeek magazine. He was also a picture editor for The Daily, Forbes magazine, the Associated Press, as well as for various corporate publications. He teaches photography at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, and has taught at the International Center of Photography and the Adorama Photo Workshops.
